Anime: Princess Mononoke, Hexfix93’s take.

September 23rd, 2008 by Hexfix93

Simply one of the best films ever made. The story is epic. Yes it has this romance theme through out it. the good thing is that it doesn’t annoy me. This is a violent film. Very graphic in parts. This is also very tripy. I could watch this under the influence and be mesmerized by it. The voice acting on this studio gibli film is done really well. I can watch it in english and not throw up all over myself. This is not the case with a few other gibli dubs. Hats off to claire danes, gillian anderson, mini driver, and billy bob thornton. They managed to actually do a good job on the dubs. I really love the gods of the forest. And the great forest spirit is really tripped out. I love it.

What I really love, is the over all story. Man vs nature. Human kind vs the forests, and the spirits and gods of the forest. I cry when I watch movies like this. My heart really bleeds for nature. These movies really hit it home. The fact that in this fictional story, the truth of what mankind is really doing in reality, is told in this fictional story(the truth is usually in the fiction, the lies are usually in what is called the truth). Hayao Miyazaki always knows how to get the very issues I really care about. His other films are amazing as well, I previously reviewed Spirited Away which I really loved as well. The characters, the acting, the story are very strong in this anime. I give this a 5 out of 5. Go rent it or Click Here To buy the DVD.

Pro Audio: Lexicon PCM96. Hexfix93’s take.

September 19th, 2008 by Hexfix93

Yes, This thing is the bomb. I’m not kidding. Dark, smooth, or bright verbs, that sound real, with smooth tails that are not metallic, it can do some metallic tails where it’s wanted if need be. This thing has super smooth reverb tails, something you do not get with plug ins. I hate all reverb plug ins, even convolution verbs. They lack modulation and the sound results sound unnatural to me. This thing is expensive, but man its worth it. To finally get some of my drums to sound like juno reactor, and astral projection. Yup this thing gets me there in combination with my distressors and drawmer tubestation. It’s like a super pcm 80, with verbs from their top of the line 480 and 960 with out the bad converts and noise the old units have. This thing is lush, full, wide and amazing. Sure I like the halls a lot. But the plates and rooms are simply breath taking. So much better than the ksp8 I have. The ksp8 sounds kind of bright and metallic, but in a good way that is not cheap. This is smooth and colored and deep sounding in any way i want, dark, bandpassed, or bright. The magick is in the early reflections. That is where this unit is heads and tails above the rest.

It does subtle things that really helps the when you are mixing, giving a sound a tad more of a 3d sound, or adding huge depth to a sound. It’s so important to ambient match sounds, to make everything sound like its in the same room or space. Cheap verbs don’t get you there. This most certainly does. Worth every penny and more, in fact i think it’s a steal. You can hook it up fire wire, and use it as 4 mono fx, 2 stereo fx, or cascade. I use it analog so I don’t know that much about the AU interface. From the front panel, i seem to be able to do everything very easily. I had to figure out what buttons did what, but once i did. This thing is a breeze to use, even easier than the ksp8 that is pretty easy to use as well. In analog mode, i can use it a two fx engines, one into the other, it has many configurations and variations for mono and stereo. But I only get 2 in, 2 out no matter what. As a audio unit in logic via fire wire, it has 4 in and 4 out. I give this unit a 5 out of 5. Seriously, I love the delays, reverse verbs, and the flanger and chorus fx. It does every thing very well with it’s own lexicon color. I love it. I made an audio demo of me messing with drums, and my sh-2 doing a sample and hold filter sweep. Both, you can really tell, I play them dry first, then I start changing fx around, verbs and stuff. So Click Here To Listen to the demo. For the demo, i ran my pcm96 as an fx send on my mackie onyx mixer, and back into a stereo channel. I ran ultrabeat and my sh2 in the mackie and mixed dry and the send signal together on the analog board, and recorded it in with my rme fireface 800. After that, i did 6db of gain with the waves L3.

Pros: Breath taking sound quality and converter, Super realistic or scifi. The rooms can make things sound really wide and 3 dimensional and in your face, I love it. Best Digital Reverb on the market.

Cons: I wish it had 4 analog ins and outs instead of two. No PC vst support for the firewire, mac only, GO BUY A MAC.

I really like his fetish photography, especially his latex work. I love how latex looks, how it reflects light. Reminds me of anime, and bad super heros. Or evil scientists and things like that. It’s one of the fetishes I actually like. Any how, check out his sight by Clicking Here!

I wish more people did latex photography. It’s not to late for you to start, I found this cool site that has reviews of cameras, and all kinds of other things: Digital Cameras Check it out.
Below are more great photos from Martin Perreault.

Playstation 3, another reason it’s better.

September 18th, 2008 by Hexfix93

Life is pretty cool, But folding at home helps to save lives. Xbox, and wii, don’t even come close to helping humanity like the ps3 does. Folding at home is a protein folding simulator, to try and help find cures for many diseases. Really cool. The ps3 is used for science that helps mankind. Noble and another reason to pick the ps3 over the WII and the 360.

Music: The Zeigeist: The Jade Motel, Hexfix93’s take.

September 16th, 2008 by Hexfix93

The Jade Hotel The Jade Motel
  1. Humanitarianism
  2. Tar Heart
  3. Wrecked Metal
  4. Room 25(interlude)
  5. Bunny
  6. Black Milk
  7. Cuffs
  8. The Lake
  9. Pressurized Chamber
  10. Fight With Shattered Mirrors
  11. 4th Floor (interlude)
  12. Dawn Night

I really like this record. It’s retro, 80s pop. Paying homage to OMD, Depeche Mode, and The Human League. But I can hear a huge influence from “THE KNIFE” as well. It’s not a rip off though. I hear a lot of real analog synths in their mix. They use bright resonant pads and sweeping sounds. I love resonant sounds.

Zeigeist - Humanitarianism

I just discovered this band and I can’t stop listening to it. My favorite song on the LP is “Tar Heart”. I love the passion in that song, especially in the female vocals. So powerful. Other great songs are Humanitarianism, Wrecked Metal, Bunny, Black Milk, Fight with Shattered Mirrors. There are no bad songs, really, i like it from start to finish.

Zeigeist - Wrecked Metal

They have cool style as well. I like their videos. I think they are from Sweden. I really like the melodies, and harmonies. The vocals really dominate. This is very club friendly as well.

I really like how the drums punch, they call themselves a pop act, but I think this has enough of an edge that it would fit right in on any goth industrial club night. This is great disco. I give this a 4.5 out of 5.Click Here to Buy The Jade Motel by Zeigeist, drm free mp3 256. And please, GO FUCKING BUY IT, DON’T GO DOWNLOAD IT FOR FREE!

Games: Mercenaries 2: World in Flames, PS3, Hexfix93’s take.

September 16th, 2008 by Hexfix93

Punk F$@#ing Rock! This game was really fun. Pure fun. Sure, it’s mindless. But its fun, it plays like a rambo type game ala ikari warriors from the 8 bit days, with a grand theft auto like open world. This is Ikari Warriors mixed with grand theft auto. You start off and the game kind of holds your hand, and yea, it’s true, you are loaded to the teeth when you start, but who cares. I loved it. If you follow the story, it is not that hard to get through it. But all the side missions are so much fun. Working for corporations, nato, or china, or the gangs and pirates, is so much fun. There is a lot of game play there. I’d say about 35 to 50 hours of game play depending on your skill level, and you can replay and side up with different allies a second time. If you like grand theft auto, this game is for you.

There are a lot of glitches and bugs. But that did not keep me from playing the game. Honestly, with all the vehicles you can drive and use, this is great fun. 2 player co-op is how I played the game with krztov my ps3 buddy. It played great, but for some reason, he was the host, and when doing the gambling missions, it would not pay both of us. When we would load the game up, he would start where he left off money wise, I would not. Kind of stupid if you ask me, if the host saves, it should also save on my machine and it should reference my save when i re join the game. But oh well. I really loved how you could hijack vehicles. Especially helicopters with the grappling hook. Shopping at the stores was great fun, i really liked some the stuff you could get air dropped. I really loved how you could steal fuel by having a helicopter pick it up after you tagged it. Get around ala helicopter was the to go. You could call one like a cab, but it was pricey. Who cares, you make a ton of money. Another thing that kind of sucked was there was no multi player death match or capture the flag. You could turn friendly fire on, but you could unload two clips into your partner and still not kill them. Kind of stupid actually.

This is not a mentally deep game. The story is very cheesy, but funny. I didn’t mind it. It was kind of duke nukem meets a B movie. Sweedish punk rocker, with his two comrades, a african american mercenary and a mercenary female. I played as the female, as I usually always do in games if I can. I loved game play. The mechanics were pretty good, easy to play. The difficulty really does ramp up by the end of the game. What really made my day in this game is the nuke you can get. Calling in air strikes was always super fun in this game, but once you get the nuke, that is some great fun. But not the only kind of fun, several types of air strikes are at your disposal. And the air fuel rockets are fracking amazing. The firepower in this game and the explosions are what really make it worth playing. It really left and impact on me. Oh yeah, and some of the things you can do with cars is impressive as well, flying off cliffs, running over stuff, great fun. Lets not forget how you can blow up just about anything in the environment. we’re talking, taking out whole city blocks. Now that is real fun.

8.0 Presentation
Pretty well done menus and load screens.

7.5 Visuals
It is pretty detailed, when you zoom in the goggles, things look great, but the over the shoulder view, well stuff looks a little less impressive. It looks good and the frame rate holds up even in big battles, and that is what impressed me the most.

7.0 Audio
The Sound was ok, voice acting was kinda horrid for a lot of it, but funny. “GENERAL PANG. THE MERCENARIES ARE HERE” LOL it’s so bad, and the stupid npcs say the same crap over and over, and it really gets annoying about 20 hrs in.

9.0 Game Mechanics
This plays pretty darn good. There are some graphical glitches, but they hardly ever got in the way.

7.0 Replay
Playing all the missions can take a long time even after you beat hte main story, and going back to play the different possible allies really is fun.

7.5 Total Score.
(out of 10 / not an average)

I rented it. But if you really like grand theft auto type of games. I say buy it. If not, it’s a definite rent. Get a buddy to play online with, the co-op mode was super fun. We had a great time.Click here to buy Mercenaries 2: World in Flames for Playstation 3.
