 alt. modeling
more and more often i am wondering if i should try to get into modeling to make money.... not saying i think i am amazing looking but i have been told i could be an alternative model. i don't really want to use my looks and sexuality to get ahead in life... but if i could stay creative with it i guess it wouldn't be so bad, and i do like a lot of alternative modeling pics (not "alt porn" though, fuck that concept...)
i just feel like i would be too fussy even for "alternative" modeling. i would not want to shave my legs, armpits, pussy, or get my eyebrows plucked etc. i wouldn't want to do sexually provocative shots either.... but i think some nudity would be fine. i was thinking more along the lines of modelling for independant/handmade clothing companies or something. but i guess i'd need a portfolio before i could do something like that..
i really don't know. i just feel like i will never make any kind of real living from my other skills, i have basically no qualifications and no real idea of how to do what i want in life (write and draw graphic novels, and also get into astrophysics and geosciences not to mention do a SHITLOAD of traveling) any time soon. maybe i should just use and abuse a system i think can sometimes be corrupt (most fashion modelling and magazines, standards within images of "beauty" etc) to make a shitload of money soon.. and if i'm gonna do that it needs to be while i'm still young and stuff....
i am posting this here because i know some people here do some modeling, and was wondering what your opinion of the industry is, if you could maybe share your experiences or give some advice about the best way to get into it? i am pretty shy and lacking in confidence too, so the idea of even posing kind of makes me feel weird and anxious.

 Re: alt. modeling
I think you could do the alt modeling scene. But I don't think you should change your look (like shaving various parts) Just put yourself out there and you'll attract a photographer/designer that'll use you for what you have to offer. Personality is key, image is nothing. If you believe you're amazing, so will they.

 Re: alt. modeling
I've posed nude recently and there was nothing pornographic about it. Most of it was geared towards a fine art aspect than anything else.
Did I make money off of it? You bet I did.... I wont do it for free anyway. But my point was something I made to my sister when I started tossing around the idea of doing nude modeling... had I got at least one paying gig a month, I could afford my share of rent. And after I got home, I handed my sister $250.
The issue is you need to be picky about who you work with. IF, for any reason, your gut says No, dont do it. And look at the photographer's portfolio. Hell, ask some of those models what they thought of working with said photographer. There's no harm in doing the research here.
And you can do alt modeling without catering to the alt porn genre. Just dont agree to any spread-legged or implied-sexual content. You can stick your tongue out to the camera to be funny (hell, expression shots like that amuse people) but you can express to the photographer that using that tongue on an object isnt acceptable. If the photographer's awesome, they'll understand.
AS for you personally, I say GO FOR IT. You're a cute one. And as for shaving parts, look up the model Wynd Milusya (I think that's how it's spelled). The girl is as natural as they come and I freaking adore her work.
EDIT: Wynd's modeling port: http://www.modelmayhem.com/116458 There's some nudity so if you're not a member of MM, you cant view some of her work.

Wow. Love her gallery... awesome dreadlocks and makes me want to grow out my fringe lol. I wish I lived in a nicer part of the world to get good outdoor shots

 Re: alt. modeling
pay attention to contracts. you can always negotiate a contract/you don't have to sign. getty's model release is kinda fucked up (i wouldn't sign that as a model (as written) unless they're paying me quite well).
do your research on the photographer.
do your research on traditional posing (look at rennisance/neoclassical and maybe ~1950's hollywood style stuff (like hurrel or diatrich); you'll make the photograph go quicker/easier, make the photographer like you, and probably get more work/be worth more/make more.
if anything gets in the way of getting to a shoot off on time, for god's sake call. depending on the shoot, you may be inconvieniencing more than the photographer (she/he may have hired a stylist/make-up artist, caterer, assistants, may have rented equipt/location, et cetera).
you could use this as a means of getting contacts within the business- you make clothing- do some favors/build some repor and you may get a photographer and model to do some work for you.

 Re: alt. modeling
thanks for all the advice!
i made a profile on that site and just uploaded a few of my own pics, stuff from when i modeled my clothes etc.
i was looking for more of Wynd on google and it seems her images are up on torrent sites under XXX and "hairy" sections... it'd be pretty weird if that ended up happening. i'd feel weird if it was me and people were whacking off over something i didn't intend to be ponographic. i guess if i'm gona put up pics online there's nothing i could really do about it though.

egsentrick wrote: as far as wacking off, that's like trying to get a guy from no longer drinking water well who says it's only guys looking at it? i do not think only men should be affiliated with masturbation, however nor do i think that all masturbation should be affiliated with porn... we all do it (most of us anyway), there's nothing wrong with it. my point is just that it sucks that there's a possibility of images i am intending for creative purposes could get put up on those sites. it's just a bit creepy, that people will not always respect the intentions of the model just so they can get their rocks off.

A while back, long ago, a girl from suicide girls said she would interview me for their site to promote vac, so i got an account there hoping i would get more press there, never happened, i posted about it here and lost a couple of fans because i said i support SG cause they were going to support me.
People get so weird over porn.

People get so weird over porn. I think I was one person who got a bit angered when you said you were going to support Suicide Girls. Heh. It was because I used to be against porn, but now I guess I support people's right to partake in/view it.... I still think it can be really objectifying and degrading, and a fake and inaccurate view of sex though. I really dislike sites like Suicide Girls etc because they claim to be so different to regular pornography, and "redefining beauty" when they really are not. The models still fall into certain standards and the only real difference is that they have tats and piercings. Maybe they started out as a good concept... but I've read many things that make me dubious of their integrity, experience from models etc. Also their terms allow them to post the pics on ANY other kind of porn site without asking permission..... Also they are affiliated with Playboy now. Ha. I think there is a pretty big difference between porn and sex. I do not consider nudity, alternative modeling or even erotic photography to necessarily be "porn". People like to make judgments about me and comments like I must "hate sex" or nudity, when they couldn't be further from the truth. There's a difference between the kind of stuff I would want to do and "alt porn" which is really just porn marketed towards a difference target audience. Anyway, I don't really wana get into a debate about porn here, cuz there's not a whole lot of point. As long as it's consentual I've no problems but I still don't really like the stuff and haven't bothered looking at any for masturbatory purposes in over 2 years now. Imagination rocks SO MUCH HARDER.

 Re: alt. modeling
I find SG reinforces a typical stereotype within the alternative scene. Most of 'em look the same... wow, how alternative.
Hino, you should go for it. Know any decent amateur photographers? It wouldn't be expensive because they'd be getting practice and they could give you some decent prints. Since you don't have a lot of experience with the professional stuff then it be less anxiety for you. You can start small and then expand in your comfort zone. I did a little bit of amateur alt. modeling but I stopped. I found people just didn't care and simply were not impressed by me. : ( It was a bit of a downer. I don't even have time for it nowadays. I do miss it though. I think you've got amazing features... beautiful eyes especially. So yeah, go for it and don't give up so easily like I did.

 Re: alt. modeling
Well I posted about it on deviant art and got talking to a photographer I sort of know through a friend. Also spoke to a make-up artist I know, that has a few projects coming up. I was supposed to model for her once before but something came up and I had to change plans last minute Hopefully it'll go better this time!!

 Re: alt. modeling
photographers are always looking for models.. you're gorgeous but you also have a really unique look at the same time and you won't have trouble finding a photographer who just wants to do artistic nudes. i'd do it if you were on my side of the atlantic!
