Music: Tegan & Sara: The Con, Hexfix93 Review.

March 27th, 2008 by Hexfix93

The Con The Con
  1. I was Married
  2. Relief next to me
  3. The Con
  4. Knife Going in
  5. Are you ten years ago
  6. Back in your head
  7. Hop a Plane
  8. Soil, Soil
  9. Burn Your life down
  10. Ninteen
  11. Floorplan
  12. Like O, Like H
  13. Dark Come Soon
  14. Call it off

To me, this is the acoustic canadian more rocked out version of Ladytron. Well, a lot more than that, but that is what it initially reminded me of. But when I bought this lp a week ago, it has not left my mp3 player since, and I have listened to it over 20 times now. I LOVE THIS. Reminds me of the musicality of the Legendary Pink dots, The kick ass song writing of the beatles, and the cute alternative canadian charm and angst of both Tegan and Sara, and I don’t care, I like TEGAN MORE. AHAAHAHAHAHAHAH take that sara. What stands out he most on this lp? By far, The vocal harmonies. Sometimes its haunting.

I cannot even tell you, these girls are so talented. So much power and emotion in their voices. Both can play instruments very well. Something I love about real musicians. There seems to be much more emotion in the music and sounds.

Sure, some of this is like ultra pop. But it has this desperation to it, this urgency and emotion that really calls out to me. I have not liked a pop record in a long long time. I really love the frantic sound of “are you ten years ago”. I love the drums on this LP. I only wish i could hook up with a drummer like this and a studio to really record it well like on this record. I am a sucker for well done acoustic guitar that doesn’t sound corny, I think they write with and record acoustic guitars perfect.

If there is one complaint I have, it is that the record is WAY TO FUCKING HOT and as a result sometimes the mid range and high hits get a tad crunchy for me(this could because of the mp3s I bought, I don’t own the actual cd, just the amazon mp3 downloads). I wish people would master stuff lower like they did in the 80s. I’m sorry it just sounds better and more hi-fi, if you want loud, buy loud hifi audio stereos!

My Favorite song is “Relief next to me” Especially the part where she says in my slamming in my frame, then my framework and then the crash hits. I love details, I love how powerful the vocals sound and how it really pushes the song. So many little details. The songs are short and and they possess you to listen to them over and over and over. I discovered this band on Myspace, it was on a fan’s page as the default music. I went to their myspace and fell in love with the songs and videos. I love their demeanor in their videos. Their Home movies made me laugh as well.

The best songs are Back in your head, Releif next to me, Nineteen, Are you ten years ago, The Con, Burn down your life. Thank you Canada for RUSH, Hockey, Skinny Puppy, Socialized Medicine, and now Tegan and Sara. I give this a 5 out of 5. Buy now! Click Here to buy The Con by Tegan & Sara. 27. “The Curse” – 3:17

First, I made a video for my favorite Napalm Death song of all time. “Musclehead”. This was the first song I ever heard from this band. Long ago on the atari st hacking demo scene, some group made a st demo with this song playing. Back then sampled music was a rare thing, so it blew us away, we were on acid. We would watch that demo over and over when we were tripping. We would roll on the floor laughing. No joke, this music was so pissed off to us at the time, there was nothing else like it back then. This was the first grindcore ever. It forever made me a fan. The song sounded like the tasmanian devil and the cookie monster having a pissed off fight over who ate all the cookies. Like one of those raging knock down throw everything in the house and break the place to pieces kind of fight. Genius. It was this that sparked the genesis of Toxic Coma. In fact, we sample napalm death all the time in toxic coma. Watch the video below, the song is only like 50 seconds long.

Waaaaaaaaaaaayyyyyyyy BACK. When Lee Dorian was the front man of napalm death, well, to me, this is the best napalm death record. Sure barney has done some great work, I wont deny him that, but Lee Dorian had the best cookie monster voice of all. What really highlights this record the most are the high pitched screams, I think Mick Harris does those. They just don’t sound the same these days with out these guys.

This is “GRINDCORE” aka “Cookie Monster Death Punk”. I simply love the originators of this genre. Napalm Death was the first to really refine it and make it kick ass not to mention Mick Harris(napalm death’s drummer) was the one who invented the term “GRINDCORE”. I listen to this music when I lift weights or when I am playing super violent video games. I love pissed off dark metal. This is the pinnacle of that genre to me in it’s most pure punk not sell out form. This music sounds angry and pissed. My favorite tracks: Unchallenged Hate, Cock-Rock Alienation, From Enslavement to Obliteration, Social Sterility, Inconceivable, Mentally Murdered, and ov course my favorite: MUSCLEHEAD!!!!!!

I still sport Napalm Death Shirts. In fact, if you see me out, the way I look these days, you would probably think I was from the grindcore scene. What really makes me love this band over all these years is their politics. They care about the world. They speak out against animal cruelty, against fascism, against war, against evil imperial capitalism etc etc. In fact, my views are pretty similar to theirs.

To me, this is fun music. I don’t listen to this all the time. I always pull this out first when I get really pissed off, or I am really pushing myself physically. This to me is the perfect angst music. Nothing out there sounds this raw, this angry, and this punk. This speaks directly to my primal hatred. Not to mention, this music is like super fast. Listen to it very carefully, this is very hard to play and perform.

The best concerts I have seen are usually grindcore shows. The energy is off the charts. I have so much fun watching this stuff live. Pure energy. I know that this will not be for everyone. If you hate metal and guitars especially. I can’t imagine most VNV fans getting into this. But honestly, these are my roots, this is where I come from musically, death punk. I give this a 5 out of 5. Music: Siouxsie & the Banshees: Tinderbox, Hexfix93’s Review.

March 14th, 2008 by Hexfix93

Tinderbox Tinderbox
  1. Candyman
  2. The Sweetest Chill
  3. This Unrest
  4. Cities in Dust
  5. Cannons
  6. Partys Fall
  7. 92
  8. Lands End
  9. The Quarterdrawing of the Dog
  10. An Execution
  11. Lullaby
  12. Umbrella
  13. Cities in Dust Extended

This is by far my favorite Siouxsie & The Banshee’s LP. From start to finish, it is simply amazing, I never skip a song. Has so much energy. A lot of upbeat songs. This is not a typical goth record at all. These are great strange pop songs that really have weight and do not sound dated at all to me. If this came out today, I would think it was a masterpiece. This LP carries so many great memories for me. I will say it, I prefer this to the Cure’s Disintegration. I love Disintegration so that is really saying something. I know tons of people who will think I am crazy for thinking such a thing. But oh well.

I really miss the bands of the 80s. They all had a really distinct sound, vocal style, and could play and perform very well. Gone are those days. Now all rock music sounds typical, with vocals that sound like your next door neighbor’s voice, nothing unique at all for the most part.

Cities in Dust was a huge club hit back when I first started clubbing. It probably got over played, but I don’t care, I still love all the over played siouxsie songs. I love how epic Cities In Dust sounds, it’s catchy too. Candyman is very upbeat and kind of surreal. Cannons is a neat franticly musical song with very cool arpeggios and acoustic guitar.

I give Siouxsie all the credit for the modern goth look. I think she was the one who really left the biggest mark image wise. 92 is great song too, I love how it talks murder and craziness. What I hate about this lp, it reminds me of my longest relationship that still haunts me to this day.

I really love the quarterdrawing of the dog, this song is so great, so atmospheric and trippy, but my all time favorite Siouxsie song is “PARTYS FALL”, that is why I like this LP the most. I love the break downs and build ups in the song, the cool strange arpeggios, the super catchy chorus, and the mesmerizing lyrics. I am so angered that it was not a HIT, to me it is the ultimate hit.

I really love Lullaby as well. The song slowly builds up and then as the this amazing chorus that rings out at the end of the song. I cannot speak highly enough about this CD. One of my all time favorites. I give this a 10 out of 5. Buy now! Click Here to buy Tinderbox by Siouxsie & The Banshees. Music: Wumpscut: Embryodead Reissue, Hexfix93’s Review.

March 3rd, 2008 by Hexfix93

Wumpscut Embryodead Embryodead
  1. Golgotha
  2. Embryodead
  3. Down Where We Belong
  4. Slave To Evil
  5. War
  6. Is It You
  7. Pest
  8. Womb
  9. Angel
  10. Still Birth
  11. Slave To Evil (infact_remix)

This is going to sound, erm, strange. Coming from an artist in this scene. But i honestly only like 2 bands from the more recent form of EBM and industrial. Wumpscut being the first, and Covenant being the second. For me, this is the most solid wumpscut cd he ever put out. Not one bad song. From start to finish it delivers.

Wumpscut knew how to make very pretty songs like, is it you, and angel. I’ll stick to this lp, even though he has many other lps that are very good as well. I love how he can sound so caustic, and then so beautiful as well. Something so few artists in this scene can pull off.

My favorite wumpscut song of all is “IS IT YOU”. This song is so amazing. I love how the song builds in this kind of depressing trance, with powerful metallic beats with big snares. I love the swelling sound in the background that hypnotizes you. But the chorus, wow. I mean I only wish I could come up with a chorus that catchy. I always liked the frantic pace of his songs. Memorable song structures, music and melody. This is not mindless yelling and ranting.

I still see wumpscut as the brother act to Velvet Acid Christ. We both have our own unique sounds. I still respect rudy very much through all these years. We both hit the scene around the same time. Both are dark and evil and kind of industrial. Wumpscut and VAC can both make super pretty songs that you cannot expect to hear on an industrial lp.

I also love the track war. So powerful and menacing. I love the creepy baseline and the noisy percussive loop. Not many bands in the scene can match the evil and intensity that wumpscut emits in most of his releases, especially his older work, especially this lp. The perfect blend of mean and evil, elegance and beauty. Rudy can really show off emotion in a way that doesn’t sound contrived, rehearsed, or shallow. It sounds very polished and pro. His vocals are so strong. My favorite tracks are, IS IT YOU, WOMB, WAR, EMBRYODEAD, SLAVE TO EVIL. I give this a 5 out of 5. and then some. Buy now! Click Here to buy EMBROYDEAD by WUMPSCUT. Music: Meat Beat Manifesto: Satyricon, Hexfix93’s Review.

February 25th, 2008 by Hexfix93

Meat Beat Manifesto satyricon Satyricon
  1. Pot Sounds
  2. Mindstream
  3. Drop
  4. Original Control version 1
  5. Your mind belongs to the state
  6. Circles
  7. The Spheres
  8. Brainwashed This way
  9. Original Control version 2
  10. Euthanasia
  11. Edge of no control pt1
  12. Edge of no control pt2
  13. Untold Stories
  14. Son of Sam
  15. Track 15
  16. Placebo

I was really disappointed that there was not a a good video net presence of meat beat, a lot of the videos won’t embed, and some are such shit quality i almost did not do this review. Any how, look past the poor quality. I think this is the best LP to introduce meat beat manifesto to someone who has never heard any of it. This is one of my favorite bands, and over the years has been a huge influence on how I make beats and sing. You can thank meat beat for the more laid back vocal style on the Fun With Knives LP.

This band is very politically conscious. I share most of the same views. Pro Animal rights, anti mainstream institution. This record had a more pop appeal to it and was a big step up in terms of production and mixing over the LPS that came before this one. My favorite meat beat is still STORM THE STUDIO. I had the best trips when I listened to that LP.

Anyway, my favorite songs on this LP are, Original Control version 2, I AM ELECTRO! MY BRAIN IS BIGGER THAN YOURS. This is one of the coolest electro dance tracks I have ever herd. The beat is big, the hats, awesome. The crazy modular broken machine sounds. Truly Psychedelic. I really love Drop as well, the bit crushed loop that starts it out, then the beat explodes out and sounds all big and metallic. Awesome sound fx and the discontented vocals. I can totally relate to the lyrics.

Uploaded by 103clips

Euthanasia is really hypnotic and spacey as well. Original Control Version 3 from the edge of no control single is my all time favorite meat beat manifesto track. This song is so hyper and catchy and punchy. Thorsten and I would dork out in our tour bus to this song. The Son Of Sam is a great track as well. This band is overlooked so much. They deserve so much more credit than they have ever gotten.

Any time in my life if I feel like I am losing it, going crazy, or super depressed, If i throw on this LP, or Storm the studio, or 99%, My mind relaxes and recovers. For me, Meat Beat is like a calm down drug for me. It makes me mellow out and think about trippy things. This band has saved me from so many bad trips. On the psychedelic plane, or just in every day life. Meat Beat Stabilizes me. Never miss them live, if they are playing live near you, sell a body part if you have to in able to see it. They are so great live, I have seen them so many times, and every time I am blown away. Buy now! Click Here to buy Satyricon by MBM. Music: MSTRKRFT: The Looks, Hexfix93’s Review.

February 18th, 2008 by Hexfix93

MSTRKRFT The Looks
  1. Work on You
  2. Easy Love
  3. She’s Good For Business
  4. Paris
  5. The Looks
  6. Street Justice
  7. Bodywork
  8. Neon Knights

I freaked out when I found out this band was a side project from the band “Death From Above 1979” Totally Different sounding band. I think that band has disband now though. These guys are talented. This is some of the best dance music I have heard in ages. I will throw out a comparison though. It does remind me of a more upbeat Daft Punk.

I seriously have listened to this LP a lot since I bought it and downloaded it from amazon’s mp3 store. I discovered it from buying LCD Sound system and Digitalism, it was one of those “other people who bought this, bought this” Thingies. What luck. I thought it was super corny when I first listened to it but it grew on me. I saw the video for “EASY LOVE” first, and this is what really made me like it. I couldnt get it out of my head. Sure its a tad perverted, but it kind of reminds me of the benny benassi “satisfaction” video in a weird way.

This kind of reminds me of the newer toxic coma We’ve been doing as well, it has the upbeat disco techno vibe. With catchy hooks. Even though this is a dance lp, i consider it to be very musical, there are cool synthleads all over the record, nifty bass lines that are pretty complex as well.

The track Street Justice reminds me of something the Chemical Brothers would do. The best way to describe the whole lp is “infectious”. I seriously can’t get this out of my head. I prefer it to most of the techno lps I have heard over the last 10 years. I think it has more bite than the chemical brothers, it’s more musical and catchier as well. I never thought I would say something like that about a new techno band.

My favorite tracks are Easy Love, Paris, She’s Good For Business, and Work on you. I love their remixes as well. Ontario is blessed to have such a kick ass techno project. If you are into techno, don’t over look this LP.. Buy now! Click Here to buy The Looks by MSTRKRFT. Click Here to buy MSTRKRFT: THE LOOKS mp3s high quality DRM free for 7.92.

Bonus: MSTRKRFT REMIXES:
Death From Above 1979 - Sexy Results (Mstrkrft Edition), This video is so fucking weird:

Metric - Monster Hospital (MSTRKRFT RMX). I like This video as well.
