Movies: Persepolis, Hexfix93’s take.

November 11th, 2008 by Hexfix93

I absolutely loved this film. Not one of my favorites, but really good. This movie centers around the life of Marjane. This movie humanizes the people of Iran, something the country I live in never shows. This film opened my eyes. It is really political. It really shows a lot of sides. It really shows that not everyone in that country is some fanatical terrorist religious nut that the USA tells us. It is a tale of punk. Punk in Iran. Who flees to europe to go to school to learn the hardships of western life, and compare it to hers. I really liked this. The voice acting is good. I watched it subtitled though. I give this a 4 out of 5. Go rent it or buy it.

I got this on DVD a while ago. It had very good reviews when it came out. I’ve worked with a few Iranians. There are a lot of them in west London. They’re good people. The food’s good too! I’ve learnt a bit of Farsi on the way and a couple of times I’ve been able to help Iranians on the Underground. They’re always astonished to hear a Westerner speaking Persian. It’s amazing how language can break down barriers. The film is interesting as it starts off showing what life was like under the Shah and the Savak (secret police). Now they have the Ayotollah and the Basij (religious vigiliantes). Like a lot of countries, there is a rich, educated, liberal-minded urban elite (in Iran, they’re concentrated in the north of Teheran, in Shemrun) and there is a poorer, less educated, more conservative rural population. Sound familiar? The main character’s family is from the urban elite. The Council of Guardians has prevented liberal candidates from standing for the Majlis (parliament)and from standing for the Presidency. As a consequences, The Islamic Republic doesn’t have the government that its people would like to have chosen so we shouldn’t confuse the ordinary people with the government. Iran has a huge population of young people and most of them are really no different to young people anywhere else. The economic situation there is bad. Pressure is building. Perhaps a second revolution will happen. I hope so. Mitun-e!

BTW you need to correct the spelling of the title.

the English adaptation of the film features voice talents of Iggy Pop, fittingly enough for the punk influence.

there is also a documentary called Heavy Metal In Baghdad, about an Iraqi heavy metal band and their struggle of playing the music in a Muslim country.

For those that don’t know this was 2 graphic novels before the movies… same art style and everything… i’d have to say my fav parts in the movie were here singing along to eye of the tiger all sorts of out of key and when she was a kid pretending to gbe a punk/metal rocker in her room….. i haven’t seen this in ages.. i should rent it again..

I just saw the new clone wars cartoon that came out this summer.. surprisingly it’s a much better film then the first of the prequels.. still no empire strikes back though.. good animation
