I went back to the Virus A, I prefer it. The virus aliases really bad up high, so all of them are useless for strings in my opinion because of that.

I use the 8080 for strings, sounds so much better than the ti.

Mmmm, when you buy a virus, you're not buying it because it emulates Analog synthesis because it doesnt really or very harshly, you are buying it for the Virus sound. If you dont like it, simply go buy something else.

I have owned a Virus Polar TI for 2 years now and I will say it is awesome for pads, distortion and arps. I probably wouldnt use it for bass sounds because I feel it has a very hollow sound which lends itself well to pads and more sustained based patches but is utter shite on HipHop basslines, you cant beat the SE1x for that.

Its a tough one, the virus signature sound is still very heavily used because it sounds aggressive and in your face and thats what is powering alot of pop and RnB at the moment. If you are clever with your patch layering there really isnt anything you cant create with it. I find mixing it with a few Omnisphere patches works wonders.

Nice sample. Have you had a chance to check out a TI2 yet? If it's a converter issue (which access claims are the same for all TIs) then I imagine it would be sorted with the latest version of the virus.

Power supply could also be the culprit, the Snow having an external one.

I'm looking at the Virus range as an alternative to hauling out all my analogue stuff when performing (even with analogue, I like my synths to sound more like DX7s than Moogs, so I don't think it'd be too big a stretch), but I'd much prefer the lush control surface and keyboard of the larger models. Being used to the insanely punchy bass I get from my midiminiafied ATC-X I'd definitely want the virus with the hottest outputs.

Solid review, Hexfix.

Hexfix93:

Cool review! :^)

First of all: THANK-YOU for encoding your demo at 320kbps; yes, more information in the audio stream DOES matter!

OK: The differences between TI and Snow (to my ears, anyway) are quite subtle, but we did some critical listening to the Snow, and the differences ARE there.

I personally LOVE the Snow's form factor! How can you keep from taking it along...it's amazingly small, especially given it's HUGE sound!

2.7.3 (TI OS, including SNOW) has just come out; as usual: it takes a while for Access to really nail it down, but I gotta give them credit for being so darned proactive and persistent!

Bottom line, I agree with you that the Snow sounds (at least subtly) better, but the TI platform has definitely matured over the past couple of years.

Thanks for sharing, Hexfix93!

Best of luck on your endevours!

first of all hi!

i am the owner of virus b and c and i can say that many patches edited with the same params sound different on both.
so, regarding this ti fever (which by the way i was cought into myself) made me searching reviews about ti and the ti snow.
i own also a uQ which imho sounds far better than virus and more analog like (if programmed properly), but the virus has its own specific sound which i can hear against the other (i even recognize the modified presets in some songs - many by the way).
so, you say that the snow worth investing in...here it will cost me with all the taxes about 1150eur - new...so it is a lot of money to buy it. i have considered also the blofeld but i cannot get used with its sound and the way it is operated....i'm "virusated".

i am ending this comment saying that, after reading your article i will buy the snow (not that "snow" :-) ) and try to do some work! hope it will worth the investment.

keep it ACID and best regards from romania!

Piss off, Tom. You have no place to say someone like Bryan here has no idea what he is doing. One of you has published many meaningful pieces of music, the other is a faceless nobody. That's you =)

The Snow sounds intresting , i saw the demo at Namm 2008 this year and was pretty impressed with it's soundset. It's pretty cheap here in the UK also and i'm thinking of getting one myself.

Always intresting to read your reviews

Oh by the way the MP3 and your demo was really good !
