What a treat! First off, you played my FAVORITE Cure bass line ever, which was awesome to hear - The Holy Hour. Second, the bass line that you played (from the new VAC?) definitely does capture the essence of old Goth and post-punk records. Having strong bass lines as the lead definitely is what gave old Goth records their dark feel. Other really good bass lines from Goth music: ‘Small Talk Stinks’(which displays good use of the higher strings) and ‘In the Night’ by Bauhaus - ‘Into the Abyss’, ‘The Quick Gas’ Gang, and ‘Sebastiane’ (which is in 3/4, plus shows off both higher and lower register bass strings) by Sex Gang Children - ‘Heart and Soul’ and ‘Colony’ by Joy Division, just to name a few. I could go on and on.
Now I’m curious to hear what kind of beats you bring to the table with a strong bass line like that. Records today are missing good, creative bass lines, something that I admit is often hard for me to write in my own music. Your demonstration definitely piques my interest in hearing what the new VAC will offer!

Yeah, it’s something i want to nail on the new record, those dark groves and bass lines that drive. i tried to get it going on lfb, but never really had the right gear, and now, i do.. so it is all falling into place..

I just listened to the podcast on a morning drive. It made my drive a lot more enjoyable. I really hope you do more.
I am glad to hear that you will be doing some more acoustic in your upcoming work. I think you need to go with what you think you need to go with otherwise it wont be what u are feeling. I think when bands play for an audience is when the real creativity and expression is not conveyed. It then becomes marketing and not music.
Nice guitar and bass playing in the cast btw.
Keep up the good work man!!
Peace!!

Too cool. I’m really digging the acoustic sound you’ve started tinkering around with. It makes me even more anxious to hear what’s coming up next in the VAC catalog.

Just curious, Bryan, what are some of your favorite Bauhaus tunes?
January 10th, 2008 at 6:04 pm
I’ve been meaning to register.
Bryan, don’t stop doing these podcasts please.
Once a week would be awesome, I think. You were very mellow in this podcast, so I think it would be good to hear what you have to say when you’re pissed.

Next time you should just have your voice without any effect. You have a cool natural voice. It’s very badass by itself :)
