Synths: MFB OSC-01, Modular Oscillator, Eurorack. Review!

osc-01.JPG

The good: Click Here to listen to the mfb osc-01 in action, first sound is osc sync bass through the ssm filter, 2nd sound is pwm sync detuned lead through the frequensteiner high pass. This thing sounds great for a dco, I can get good bass and pwm and sync sounds out of it really easy. It’s pretty stable, I had to calibrate the tracking for intonation. Once I did, I was able to get 4 good octaves out of it, and it was stable. Better than any osc in this doepfer rack stuff I have tried so far (only plan b). It’s a great deal, 3 oscillators for about 220 US dollars. I got it used for 170. I would compare this to an alpha juno oscillator on steroids. Since the junos don’t do sync sounds it gets hard to compare there. The saw is ok, but it’s the pwm that really shines on this. When using all 3 oscillators, it always sounds like a polysynth in unison. This oscillator shines when played down low or in the mids.

The bad: The output volume is bad on the combined output, and a little bit better on the individual outs, but this thing is not nearly as loud as my plan b oscillators. But they get the job done. It is not quite as fat as the plan b, especially the SAWS. The saw is strange on it. If i have set on 16, osc 1 and 2 the signal gets really weak on the c0 octave when controlling it from my kenton pro solo via midi, but only in saw mode. Osc 3 does not have that problem at all. It sounds strange up high, and I think I can hear some aliasing, not sure, but something strange when I play way up on the keyboard. So I think this osc is sub par on high leads.

Final Word: If you want to add some alpha juno oscillators into your modular rack, this is the ticket. It doesnt do as many wave forms as the alpha juno, but the sound is similar. This does OSC SYNC, and its great. It does all those buzzy techno sounds similar to the alpha juno. It sounds very 80s roland, dco that is. And I am a huge fan of the junos. This is a great buy for me.

Gear news. Studio update.

January 25th, 2008 by Hexfix93

In my modular, the plan B model 15 oscillators failed me, is not stable enough for my tastes. I simply got tired of having to calibrate the keyboard scaling every time I turned the unit on. Oh well. I am very glad to say that Shawn of Analog Haven and I worked out a deal to work this out. I still want a plan b model 09 though. Plan b is good, I think I just got a couple of sour modules.

What am I replacing the model 15s with? MFB OSC-01 triple DCO oscillators that sound more like a juno 106 and sh-101 but super stable and scale almost perfectly. DCOs are great, but do lack a little warmth and lower frequencies. Not to worry, I will add a Moog Freq Box that will work just like any oscilator in my rig, controlled with cv. This is an oscillator from the minimoog voyager. This will fatten up my dcos nicely.. The voyager oscillators track great so i should have no problem. THIS DEMO of the Harvestman Polivoks Filter is mindblowing. I love my bitcrusher from Harvestman. In fact that is what kept me from selling off the modular. That polivoks sounds simply amazing. WOW. A while back I used to layer my juno 106 and micromoog together and would get huge sounds. Now I will have that with better filters. I cannot wait to get all this.. I will post reviews of it once I have it for a week.

Site News

January 24th, 2008 by Hexfix93

Yup, I am working full time on the new record. This site will not be updated like it was. I will add things when i have time for it. Video games and movies are something I cannot get into right now as I have a million other things to do, and writing game reviews doesn’t pay the bills. Oh well. I hope to continue to make this site more interesting though. So stay tuned.

VAC: Who is Velvet Acid Christ? 2008 tour? new lp?

January 13th, 2008 by Hexfix93

vacnews.jpg
UPDATE: I’m taking a few days off from the blog. need a break. worked through the entire holiday season.

A very complex Question. As of right now it is Bryan Erickson aka Disease Factory(as vocalist and musicians) aka Hexfix93(As producers and engineer): Plays Keybaords and Synths, Drums, Guitars, Bass, Vocals, Lyrics, Producer, Engineer, Mixing, Programming fx and synths. Todd Loomis aka Elegia: Plays guitars, and keyboards and synths, some drum work. I will work on a track with Erick Kosnar as well, we’ll see how that goes. VAC started in 1990 in Boulder Colorado. Inventor and founding member is Bryan Erickson, Bryan has been the leader in every incarnation and line up of the project since it’s inception.

We finally have a live band in the works, The line up might be, Disease Factory, Elegia(maybe), and Hypostasis and maybe Eric Kosnar of Darker Days Tomorrow/Emergence(this depends on some things and may or may not happen). This will probably be the live band during the upcoming 2008 Velvet Acid Christ world tour. Hope this gives my fans some hope. Nothing is written in stone, but so far I think these guys on will be on board for shows. We plan on having a new VAC record out in spring or fall, and a tour in the summer. I will be adding a Current band members page to this site very soon. No mater what, i am touring in 2008, even if all my hair falls out.. ahahaahahah

The New LP to come out in 2008 is called “Songs for Villains: Hymn’s ov the Apocalypse.” . So far we have 4 songs finished, Phucking Phreak 2008, Killed In Space(i’m on the fence on this track though, it might not make the final cut), Caustic Itch, and Faded. We only plan on making all new vac cds 45 to 50 minutes long, so 8 to 9 songs maximum. We will not do any singles in the future. If we decide to do covers, they will be online releases only for sale through Itunes or amazon. Our production is much better this time, we have mastered many daws, fx units and mixing analog. This has really improved our production, we have high end fx, great converters, great hardware compressors, mics, guitars, amps, mixers, synths and a desire to make dark brilliant songs that are catchy and memorable. We are making huge strides.

Also Todd/Elegia has made a lot of progress on his solo project. I’m hoping it will open for VAC instead of toxic coma this is not confirmed either. Toxic Coma has no plans as of now. We lost a member in Toxic Coma, so I don’t know what will happen with that side project as of now. Todd’s project is pretty cool. It sounds nothing like vac, but it is electronic. Hopefully soon we will have some demo tracks online for us to listen to..

VAC PHOTOS: LIVE SHOTS.

January 9th, 2008 by Hexfix93

Hexfix93, In florida, first show in the USA, 2000, found out that george bush won the election that day, it was super depressing, and very sad day for the world. I burned myself good at this show.

Hexfix93, Thorsten, Hypostasis @ the Doomsday festival. We played with puppy, in place of the legendary pink dots who cancled. We paid to play, we got cevin key and ogre green pajamas, we though we would be paid back, i never wanted to give them green pajamas, but we did out of the goodness of our hearts, they said they had to have green pajamas. That they would not play with out them, and at the last minute, no one had money for the green pajamas, so hypostasis and i put up the money for them. We were promised to be paid back. But puppy never paid us back, they didn’t like the green pajamas, but they just did wear them. they gave them back after using them. After all this time, i don’t have hard feelings. I look at it like we played to play. It was a day show, we had bad sound, because we didn’t get a sound check. Our sound got better by the 3rd song, but we only played for 40 minutes. In day light. Uhg…

Hexfix93 in holland 2000, This show was funny. The night before was the worst show we had ever put on, it was the first in 2000, the first since 1998, our sampler wouldnt load thanks to the crappy iomega jazz drives that never worked right, poor emu sampler got broke in the flight as well. Shit. So there were no vocal fx becuase we had never worked with the sound guy before and he had no idea how to do my vocals live till the second show. Dude, that show was so bad, the audience would not even come up to the stage. No cheers, silence. After that show, I went into our tour bus and thought about slitting my throat. I was in horror, I could not believe what a disaster that show was. Stefan saved my life that night with the hope he gave me in words. But this is a photo from the night after that disaster. Funny story, it was in holland, in this light house or something like that, the back stage was up all these stairs. Any how, I was still super depressed from the first show, so I got super drunk. I drank like half a bottle of vodka in like 15 minutes. LOL. i found out the Colorado Avalanche lost in the play offs to the dallas stars while I was about to go on stage. But i realized i was so drunk that i was about to pass out. So while the vac intro was on, and the band went out, i ran up all those flights of stairs and puked in the toilet fast, a ton. I ran down as fast as I could, on to the stage right as i was supposed to sing. We kicked ass, I was so pissed off that my hockey team lost, and our last show was terrible. This in my opinion was one of the best shows i ever put on.

e20008.jpg

The crowd at the free wave gothic treffin show we did in 2000. What a joke, we played in front of all those people, and didn’t get one cent. Just another fleecing I got in europe. In fact i made next to nothing on every european show i played, thanks to my then manager Stefan Herwig, who got big bucks for the festivals we played, and I only saw like a few hundred dollars. while he got thousands. After i left dependent over the bs money rip off on tour, and our bothced fwk tour shirts that dependent fucked up in europe, it was fucking pink. fucking pink VAC shirts. PINK!. That was the beginning of the end for his label. Any how, that show was huge, thousands of people.. thousands. it was crazy..
