Music: Treasure by Cocteau Twins, Disease Factory’s Take

If you like The Cure, Siouxsie, or anything in that vein, well this is kind of in that vein. 4ad, the label that brought us a lot of shoe gaze music, also gave us The Cocteau Twins. This music is strange and pretty with Kind of goofy(in a good way) vocals that sound alien. Elizabeth Fraser uses a mish mash of languages together to make the lyrics. Her voice is so unique and classical in this strange way. No one can really understand it. To me it is genius. The video below is for “Lorelei”, and is a fan video.
These are not the best Cocteau Twins songs, no, but to me this lp flows the best from start to finish, for that, I call it their best lp. There is this verb on everything, I don’t know how they managed it, maybe it’s just the room they recorded in but it puts this mood to the entire record. This dark mysterious kind of ambience. The songs ebb and flow like the ocean. Their musical talent is amazing. The vocals can be so light then so intense the next minute. The songs build and flow as if they were actual living beings. The Video below is for “Beatrix”, also fan made.
I love the tight drum machine sound. Punchy and mechanical rhythms. I think my favorite song on this lp is the opening track “IVO”. I love how this song rises and falls with the vocal melodies. Very magickal, The bell sounds go perfect with the melodies. The video below is for “Amelia”, its a fan video. not work safe, nudity, gore.
My Favorite tracks are: Ivo, Lorelei, Beatrix, Persephone, Amelia, Aloysius, and Domino. My second favorite track is persephone. This song is very heavy and has a more rock sound to it. I love how the vocals really fluctuate and waver. Watch the videos, and if you like this, please listen to more of their stuff, because a lot of it is really great.. The video below is for “Aloysius”.
Easily my favorite 4ad band. So relaxing, so beautiful, so elegant, and so very unique. There are not any bands making music at this level anymore. That is why I reach into the past for my reviews to show you what really influences me as an artist. This is the lp i listened to the most on my first european tour, it relaxed me before the show and got my nerves under control. Oh the power of music. Buy now! Click Here to buy Treasure! On that page you can also buy the mp3s at 256 for 8.99. good deal.
I’m getting angry, no one comments on these great bands i review. Please, if you like this, please talk about it… i would appreciate it.

I was wondering whether you would do a Cocteau Twins review and hoping that, if you did, it would be “Treasure”. This and “Head Over Heels” are for me their two best albums.

this is the only album i have ever had by them… i really like it…the vocals keep a sense of freshness within the music… very happy with the choices of albums that you have reviewed thus far.
How about older delerium? i loved semantic spaces, and parts of karma were good too, but after karma…went way too pop sounding…but even the very early stuff from the 80’s when it was just leeb..what do you think of that work? any influence of that on anything you have done?

I too loved Karma and semantic spaces, but yeah, nothing else has really hit the mark.

The only Cocteau Twins album that I particularly enjoyed was The Pink Opaque. Wax and Wane is my favorite track because of its sheer intensity and surreal feeling. I think that that track was somewhat of an anomaly in their work though =/

well…i know about the whole diss on the remix you made…which on the fun with knives album…i think what you did was sick…not sure what the remix actually sounded like…never found a clip of that anywhere….but fun with knives was an amazing album…as is all of what you have put out…but as far as leeb for me…its the bass synth…something that is missing from sooooooo much of electronic music…that little filler is perfect in his works…not that FLA, or anything else he has done is the best…i do enjoy his works, but yes..not the best….but how the music is constructed is leaps and bounds beyond 99% of the electronic music put out today…
that is mostly why i enjoy VAC…it is something fresh…something pure….i relate with the music..the lyrics…i tend to listen to just about every style out there…have various groups in just about every genre that i like…but when i was in iraq, and when i’ll be back in a few months..the shit that gets me through every day is VAC….and some softer shit when i need a break from violence…such as LPD, DCD, or delerium…depeche mode is a nice break too…but at times a lil too gayish and love like for me to handle…its way too dark there for that kind of music….feindflug is perfect before going out on a patrol….unique style….but seriously…VAC is by far one of my favorite groups of all time…way beyond anyting from classic rock like zep, doors, cash, ect….just amazing…no matter what mood i’m in…i can find a song or songs that fit into whats going on…and in iraq the past two tours…it has given me the will power to go on…funny how music can give you that shit…but serously man…your music is amazing…never seen you live yet…and i hope you don’t tour while i’m in iraq…and you wait until i get back….i write a little bit of music with a friend of mine..who is along the same mindset as you..at least from what i gather from your blogs…amazing musician…i am no where near his calaber….but working on improving my skills….too bad he is in NY, or you guys could have worked something out for touring or some shit…but i just want to say thanks for the yrs of great music…and this site is amazing…great way for fans to interact with you..even if its only 4 word responses…it shows that you care enough to respond and take into account what people say….
what newer music are you into? not nec. in the industrial scene..cuz the scene these days is real shitty…only a few groups are putting out anything worth while…the rest are generic pieces of shit….mostly computer imputed music…not much skill or thought put into it…wish it was the way it was when i use to get into Mr. Bungle, NIN, VAC, FLA, Ministry ect…..way back in the day…

my dislike for leeb’s music has nothing to do with how i view him. i really don’t like much of his music. as the years pass, i find it is not timeless. it bores me, it’s predictable, and most of it boring.. good for what it is and who it’s for, but that is not me anymore..

So, I went out and bought Treasure and gave it a listen…
When I first listened to it, it automatically reminded me of Siouxsie And the Banshees. (Vocal wise)
By the time I got to the second track, Lorelei, I was hooked!! What a GREAT CD, start to finish!!!
Thanx for the recomendation, and PLEASE Bryan, keep them coming!!

The local bookstore has a copy of Cocteau Twins’ BBC sessions so I’ve thought about picking that up and then hunting down this album next. I adore music like this. I’m a huge fan of Dead Can Dance, The Cure, Black Tape For Blue Girl, and just about anything that falls into this genre. Awesome stuff.
